Introduction

The cost of work related ill-health and injury

The Health and Safety Executive reported 24.6 million days were lost due to work-related ill health in 2008/9 of which 4.7million were due to workplace injury. A total of 9.3 million days were lost due to work related musculoskeletal disorders and on average each person took 17.2 days off work.

In addition 11.4 million days were lost due to work related stress/ depression/anxiety resulting in an average of 27.5 days taken off work. The total cost to employers in Britain of workplace injuries and work-related ill health is estimated at approximately £2.9 billion to £3.2 billion. Of this total, work-related ill health is estimated to have generated costs of £1.7 billion to £2 billion, while workplace injuries are estimated to have generated costs of £1.2 billion to £1.3 billion
